In this video I'll be showing you how to take old/smashed TVs and computer monitors and turn them into realistic artificial window lights, so that you can have accurate daylight illumination at any time of day. This is all possible because of the technology used inside the backlight mechanism, as I explain in the video. Enjoy!

These links are 'affliliate links' which means I may earn a small commission from purchases made through them (at no cost to the purchaser).

Here are the LED strips I recommend: amzn.to/2YsXGsm
You can also buy them on eBay: rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?icep_ff3=2&pub=5575347517&toolid=10001&campid=5338215129&customid=&icep_item=183773675897&ipn=psmain&icep_vectorid=229466&kwid=902099&mtid=824&kw=lg
And here's how to make them with laptop screens: ropost.info/flow/upV7g2mJnYWyl6Y/video.html

Dude your videos are amazing the production quality and the content is so engaging I can't stop watching 😅 you've inspired me to get off my butt and start doing something similar. Looking forward to more videos from you! I know your videos take a LOT of time and preparation but that is what makes them so engaging! I would also love your advise on how you make your videos so engaging. I tried to make something of a teardown type video last night but it hasn't turned out quite as good as yours but I am camera shy and i would love it if you could have a look and give any advise on things I'm going wrong. Take care man keep trucking on. So glad you're making content again. Ed

I know everyone has their own advice on what makes a good DIY video, but I think if you're camera shy, there's nothing wrong with a video or a series of videos were the sole focus is on the thing you're building or crafting. There's an assortment of no dialogue DIY/craft videos that explain things in text at the bottom of the screen or in the description so people can follow along or even not at all. Those videos have a great almost relaxing quality for anyone watching too, because some people aren't into ROpostrs with high energy or they feel like actors, they just want to see an interesting build project.

1:46 and press pause (1 secs of video). Window is a real window, panel with only the frameborder and the lens and 'glass' diffuse material and no backplate, is somehow attached to this window. You can clearly see the background of the house, other rooftop(s) of houses around and the light comes from the back (see sunny light bleeding around the frame). When there was a backplate attached, it was impossible to see this. He mentioned a cloudly day assuming there is no sunlight at all however with his example it is a sunny day with sun on the roof and window. Later on we see the same stair scene with light on/off however the shade under the window doesn't change in perspective, which is weird with such impressive light source. This guy must be very good with video editing, filming techniques and aftereffects. The same with the even brightness of the panels, you don't see any hotspots of light. That isn't true especially using a fewer leds (with large gaps between the leds) to light the panel. When using a camera, a camera notice these hotspots very clearly. Again some video techniques or other tricks used. Also when he pick up the panel an look right into the light of the panel, the light that shines on his face came from another light source in the background. Take a look at the angle he is holding the panel and the light source in the background. This guy has great subjects, clever dude, however there is always something that makes the video (to support the subject) better than really is. The first time I notice this is, is the video with a true power amp running on some AA-bateries in series. Ridiculous, impossible results. Don't expect to get the same results as shown in his videos, it can be quite disappointing.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but if you bought bi-color led strips to install as the backlight and wired up the appropriate controls, you could simulate the orange light from twilight and sunset. Imagine programming a realistic daylight cycle with an arduino...

Guidance please. After watching this video I purchased a small used computer monitor at a thrift store for $3US, to use as a backlight for illuminating and copying negatives. I was watching your video again and noticed that you only put a single strip of led lights along one edge and not the whole perimeter of the monitor/tv. I was going to put them along the whole perimeter until I reviewed your video again and was wondering if I in fact saw that correctly? Is placing LEDs along the whole perimeter overkill or simply unnecessary given the fresnel lens? Any advice would be greatly appreciated and thanks so much for sharing your expertise on whatever it is that you present to us. If this works I will make another one and use both of them to illuminate my photo copy table.

in your experience with Fresnel Screens (I'm guessing you aren't dealing with sheets with concentric lines, right?) can the sheet be cut to size? I'd be worried about losing the apparent depth effect. This might be the cheapest way to get a big piece of edge lit light panel. www.acrylite.co/acrylic-products/sheet/edge-lit-endlighten.html I saw your R5 thermal fix... BRILLIANT.... if you don't have an old engineering prof to pat you on your back.... and are simply a systematic problem solver.... let me be one to say "Well Done". your work on simulated sunlight is extremely interesting... your problem solving in the Canon R5 is brilliant! Has anyone tried to do this with a samsung tv? Mine looks to have a different setup with the panels. There are no little dots on the acrylic but instead there is another layer that is yellowish that was underneath the acrylic. I've tried with and without it and I am not getting the same results. The light is clearly brighter at the edge. I also tried with putting the LEDs around the entire panel, not just on one side. Thanks~
Tom X
Tom X Acum lună
@Matthew Kerner There is no specific brand - it should work with most of the brands. I found acrylic layer both in the very old PC monitor (LG Flatron) and in the few years old laptop. But I didn't find BEF layer in the old Flatron. I also had the same effect as you with the light being brighter at the edge. The only time the light was evenly distributed was when I put the lightbulbs in a carton box and covered the box with these layers. This way the light was far away from the layers. But then I changed the layers into simple tracing paper and found out that there was not much of a difference.
Matthew Kerner

Ok so now I got a Visio and the “acrylic” layer is actually cheap coated plastic that doesn’t have any of the little dots. Is there a specific brand I should look fir because “most” isn’t working for me. :-(

Great video about recycling an old broken TV :) You might also be able to salvage other electronic components for other uses, for example most modern TVs tend to have relatively good speakers (10W is quite common), so these speakers can be hooked up to a suitable audio amplifier. Older TVs (with larger enclosures) also have good sounding speakers.

It simply doesn't work ! I DID IT in various configurations. The results are nowhere near to what is being claimed in this very persuasive video. DIY Perks made a great attempt to create "Realistic Artificial Daylight". I praise him for this. The theory behind his idea is also (IMO) quite valid. Nevertheless, I think that the attempt was not successful despite what is being said in the video. I really believed that this BEF layer (erroneously called fresnel layer) will do miracles to the light. It simply doesn't. If you don't believe me, please watch closely the experiment he shows with inverse square law at around 2:30. Light drop off is still there! Even on such a small distance. And the rooms are usually larger than the plank with 4 cups. So your brain will not be fooled, because the light drop off will be there and it will be quite noticeable. (I replicated this experiment and I have to admit that I didn't notice such a clear effect as shown in the video). If you create a monitor-lamp, as DIY Perks did, and compare it to a regular ceiling lamp from a store - there will not be much of a difference. I sincerely wish otherwise. I hope other people will share the results they obtained instead of just saying how great it was to watch this video. Because we already know that this video is a pleasure to watch :)

I agree. I tried with two separate TV, one Samsung and one Visio and neither gave a realistic daylight. Two feet back and the light falls off dramatically. I used the exact LEDs he suggests and the color is also way too cool to be considered "daylight"

I have a little problem with my old TV. Mine's backlight with about 18 leds directly in the backpanel (not at the sides). Problem: The original ones have some kind of a little round diffusor directly on it. Therefor there are only 2 diffusor sheets. When I use the led strips now, you can still see every led and the light isn't as diffuse as shown in the video. It was embarrasing. The original ones are very diffuse instead. But the original TV controls sadly have a power saving function and turn the backlight off after 5 Minutes. That's sad! I could still make some kind of timed stairway light with a motion detector, haha. But I'd rather go with the led strip and get rid of the whole original circuit board and controls and so on. So has anyone a clue how to make it even more diffuse without loosing so much brightness? I don't have the panel with the diffusion pads on it like around 5:28 in the video. Should I take even more diffusor sheets from another led TV and add them to my panel or what?

You could try to use many little led strips as described at about 10:43 in the video. This should normaly be brighter. But perhaps they wouldn't be diffused so much and you still would see every single led, depending on your TV type and the layers you have.
